Vernon Parish – On October 6, 2025, at approximately 3:39 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a two-vehicle fatal crash on U.S. Highway 171 at Barham Road. This crash claimed the life of a 4-year-old child from Hornbeck.

The initial investigation indicates that a 2018 Ford Expedition was traveling north on U.S. Highway 171 when, for reasons still under investigation, it entered the median crossover in an attempt to turn left onto Barham Road. The driver failed to yield to a southbound 2004 Ford Windstar, resulting in a collision between the two vehicles.

The driver of the Expedition, who was properly restrained, sustained minor injuries. A 6-year-old passenger in the Expedition, who was unrestrained, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. A 4-year-old passenger, also unrestrained, sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the Windstar, who was properly restrained, was not injured. Routine toxicology samples were obtained and submitted for analysis.

On October 7, 2025, Troop E was notified that the 4-year-old child ultimately succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

Although not every crash is survivable, the proper use of seat belts greatly reduces the risk of serious injury or death. Taking the time to ensure that every occupant is properly restrained can often mean the difference between life and death.
