Excessive Speed Contributes to Fatal Motorcycle Crash in East Baton Rouge Parish
Baton Rouge – On Saturday, February 28, 2026, at approximately 2:42 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A responded to a fatal crash on US 61 just south of Jefferson Highway in East Baton Rouge Parish. The crash claimed the life of 43-year-old Samuel Wright of Gonzales.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2021 Kia Soul was traveling south in the right lane of Airline Highway just past Jefferson Highway. At the same time, a 2007 Suzuki GSX1300, operated by Wright, was also traveling south in the right lane of US 61 behind the Kia. For reasons still under investigation, Wright accelerated to a high rate of speed and struck the left rear of the Kia.

Wright was ejected from the motorcycle, sustained serious injuries, and was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. He was wearing a DOT-approved motorcycle helmet at the time of the crash. The driver and passenger of the Kia were properly restrained and sustained minor injuries. Impairment is not suspected; however, standard toxicology samples will be obtained and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make good decisions while operating a motor vehicle. Never drive impaired, fatigued, or distracted; follow all traffic laws, and always ensure every occupant is properly restrained. As warmer weather approaches and more motorcycles take to the road, drivers are urged to remain alert, check twice for motorcyclists, and share the roadway responsibly to help prevent serious and fatal crashes. Additionally, when riding motorcycles, utilizing proper safety equipment, such as DOT-approved helmets, can decrease the chances of traumatic brain injury. We encourage all riders to take an approved motorcycle safety course.
