East Carroll Parish Deer Crash Leaves One Dead, Driver Impairment Suspected

Alsatia – On Tuesday, April 23, 2024, shortly after 12:00 a.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop F began investigating a fatal crash on US 65 near LA 580. The crash claimed the life of 33-year-old Jamaar Scott of Lake Providence.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2008 GMC Yukon, driven by Scott, was traveling north on US 65. For reasons still under investigation, the GMC struck a deer in the roadway before exiting to the left and overturning.

Scott, who was unrestrained, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Impairment and speed are suspected factors in this crash. Routine toxicology samples were collected and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make good decisions while in a motor vehicle. Never drive impaired, fatigued or distracted, follow all traffic laws, and always ensure every occupant is properly restrained. While not all crashes are survivable, taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.

In 2024, Troop F has investigated 13 fatal crashes, resulting in 14 deaths.
