Port BarreOn February 25, 2025, shortly before 8:00 am., Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a two-vehicle fatality crash on US Highway 190 at its intersection with Louisiana Highway 743. The crash ultimately claimed the life of an unborn child.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2022 Freightliner 18-wheeler, driven by 51-year-old Albert Jenkins of Lafayette, was traveling south on LA Hwy 743. At the same time, a 2024 KIA Seltos was traveling west in the right lane of US Hwy 190. For reasons still under investigation, the Freightliner failed to yield at a stop sign and turned left onto US Hwy 190, crossing into the path of the approaching KIA. As a result, the KIA collided with the rear of the Freightliner’s trailer.

The driver of the KIA, who was properly restrained and pregnant at the time of the crash, sustained critical injuries. After being transported to a local hospital, it was learned that the unborn child died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Jenkins was properly restrained and uninjured.

As part of the ongoing investigation, a toxicology sample was obtained from the driver of the Freightliner and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Properly yielding the right of way is essential for keeping everyone on the road safe. Always come to a complete stop at stop signs, check for oncoming traffic in both directions, and proceed only when it is clear. Taking a moment to look twice can help prevent crashes and save lives.
