Covington Man Killed in St. Tammany Parish Crash

Covington – Yesterday, shortly before 5:00 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a two-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 25 near Gotti Road in St. Tammany Parish. The crash claimed the life of 54-year-old Lonnie Sanchez Jr. of Covington.

The initial investigation revealed the crash occurred as Sanchez was southbound on LA Hwy 25 in a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. At the same time, a 2012 Freightliner M2 was at a complete stop on the southbound shoulder of LA Hwy 25. For reasons still under investigation, the Jeep traveled onto the southbound shoulder and impacted the Freightliner.

Despite Sanchez being properly restrained, he sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash. He was transported to a local hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Freightliner was properly restrained and was uninjured. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor and this crash remains under investigation.

Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make good decisions while in a motor vehicle. Never drive impaired, fatigued or distracted, follow all traffic laws and always ensure every occupant is properly restrained. While not all crashes are survivable, taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.
