Colfax Man Killed in Grant Parish Crash
Grant Parish – On September 15, 2024, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a one-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 158. The crash claimed the life of 74-year-old Ernest Chelette of Colfax.
The initial investigation revealed that a 2001 Toyota pickup, driven by Chelette, was traveling west on Louisiana Highway 158. For reasons still under investigation, Chelette’s vehicle left the roadway, traveled down the ditch embankment and struck several trees. As a result, the Toyota overturned and ejected Chelette from the vehicle.
Chelette, who was not restrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Routine toxicology samples were obtained and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained can often mean the difference between life and death.
