Bicyclist Succumbs to Injuries Days After Crash in Ascension Parish
Gonzales – Shortly after 4:00 p.m. on July 1, 2024, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A responded to a crash involving a bicyclist on LA 429 and Martin Road in Ascension Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 39-year-old Chant Parker of Saint Amant.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2023 Volkswagen Atlas was traveling eastbound on LA 429. At the same time, Parker was riding a bicycle eastbound on LA 429. As the Volkswagen began to pass the bicycle on its left, the bicycle entered the path of the Volkswagen. As a result, the Volkswagen impacted the rear of the bicycle.
Parker was ejected from the bicycle, sustained serious injuries, and was transported to a nearby hospital. On July 5th, 2024, Troopers were made aware that Parker succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The driver of the vehicle, who was restrained at the time of the crash, was uninjured during the crash. Impairment is not suspected, however, standard toxicology samples will be taken and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Louisiana bicycle law mandates that cyclists must adhere to traffic regulations just like motorists. Additionally, cyclists are required to ride as close to the right-hand side of the road as possible, except when passing or turning left. Adhering to these laws not only promotes roadway safety but also ensures better understanding between cyclists and other road users in Louisiana.
