Opelousas – On July 28, 2026, just before 6:00 a.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a two-vehicle fatality crash involving an electric bicycle on Interstate 49 Service Road near Louisiana Highway 3721. The crash claimed the life of 57-year-old Jamie Doucet of Opelousas.
The preliminary investigation revealed Doucet was traveling south while riding an electric bicycle. At the same time, a 2012 Nissan Rogue was traveling south on I-49 Service Road. For reasons still under investigation, the Nissan struck the electric bicycle from the back.
Doucet, who was not wearing a helmet nor reflective clothing, sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the Nissan was properly restrained and not injured.
The driver of the Nissan was not suspected of being impaired and voluntarily provided a breath sample, which showed no alcohol detected. A routine toxicology sample was obtained from Doucet and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Troopers wish to remind bicyclists that Louisiana law classifies bicycles as vehicles, requiring operators to follow the same traffic rules as motorists. Additionally, staying visible by using proper lighting and wearing brightly colored or reflective clothing in low-light conditions enhances your safety when sharing the road.
