Opelousas – On October 7, 2025, just before 8:00 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a two-vehicle fatality crash involving a bicycle on US Highway 190 near Louisiana Highway 35. The crash claimed the life of 68-year-old Dallas Pitre of Opelousas.
The preliminary investigation revealed Pitre was traveling west in the eastbound lane of US Hwy 190 while riding a bicycle. At the same time, a 2020 Ford commercial van was traveling east on US Hwy 190. For reasons still under investigation, the Ford struck the bicycle.
Pitre, who was not wearing a helmet, sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the Ford was properly restrained and not injured.
The driver of the Ford was not suspected of being impaired and voluntarily provided a breath sample, which showed no alcohol detected. A routine toxicology sample was obtained from Pitre and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Troopers wish to remind bicyclists that Louisiana law classifies bicycles as vehicles, requiring operators to follow the same traffic rules as motorists. Additionally, staying visible by using proper lighting and wearing brightly colored or reflective clothing in low-light conditions enhances your safety when sharing the road.
