Bicyclist Killed in Late Night Iberville Parish Crash

Plaquemine – Shortly after 9:30 p.m. on December 13, 2024, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A responded to a crash involving a bicyclist on LA 1148 in Iberville Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 36-year-old Jonathan Harris of Plaquemine.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Harris and another passenger were riding a bicycle west on LA 1148 in the roadway. At the same time, a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee was also traveling west on LA 1148 in the westbound lane. For reasons still under investigation, the Jeep struck the rear of the bicycle in the westbound lane of travel.

Harris sustained serious injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene. The passenger on the bicycle sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The driver of the Jeep was properly restrained and was uninjured. As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana bicycle law mandates that cyclists must adhere to traffic regulations just like motorists. Additionally, cyclists are required to ride as close to the right-hand side of the road as possible, except when passing or turning left. Adhering to these laws not only promotes roadway safety but also ensures better understanding between cyclists and other road users in Louisiana.
