Bicyclist Killed in Iberville Parish Crash

Plaquemine Shortly after 7:30 p.m. on December 30, 2024, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A responded to a crash involving a bicyclist on LA 1 near Saint Louis Road in Iberville Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 26-year-old Davonte Russ of Plaquemine.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2018 Ford Focus was traveling northbound on LA 1. At the same time, Russ was traveling westbound on a bicycle in an attempt to cross LA 1. As a result, the bicycle impacted the front of the Ford.

Russ sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Ford was properly restrained and was uninjured. As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana bicycle law mandates that cyclists must adhere to traffic regulations just like motorists. Additionally, cyclists are required to ride as close to the right-hand side of the road as possible, except when passing or turning left. Adhering to these laws not only promotes roadway safety but also ensures better understanding between cyclists and other road users in Louisiana.
