Baton Rouge – Shortly after 3:00 a.m. this morning, Troopers from Louisiana State Police were notified that the St. Charles Sheriff’s Office was in a recent pursuit with a stolen Acadian Ambulance on Interstate 10. The Sheriff’s Office elected to terminate the pursuit; however, a short time later the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office observed the ambulance and initiated a second pursuit. The pursuit continued into St. James Parish where Troopers also attempted to stop the ambulance. The driver, 38-year-old Jeremy McCurly of Baton Rouge, refused to stop and continued traveling west on I-10 towards East Baton Rouge Parish.
After entering East Baton Rouge Parish, Troopers successfully deployed a tire deflation device on the ambulance; however, McCurley refused to stop and proceeded to ram the rear of a fully marked Louisiana State Police patrol unit. After striking the LSP unit, another responding Trooper rammed the ambulance to disable the vehicle and end the pursuit. McCurley proceeded to flee the scene on foot and jumped off the Perkins Road overpass sustaining moderate injuries as a result of the fall.
McCurley was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center for treatment. Once medically cleared, McCurley will be booked for several criminal charges, including Theft and Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle, Aggravated Flight from Officers, and numerous traffic violations.
The Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations responded to the scene to conduct a use of force investigation due to the intentional ramming of the stolen vehicle.
This is an active investigation and further information will be released when it becomes available.
