Wrong-Way Driver Arrested Following Four-Vehicle Fatal Crash

Webster Parish – On Saturday, February 3, 2024, shortly after 2:00 a.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop G began investigating a four-vehicle fatal crash on I-20 west of US 371. The crash claimed the life of 20-year-old Savanah Shelton of Houston, TX.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2022 Dodge Charger, driven by 20-year-old Marcus Baggett, was traveling east on I-20. At the same time, Vehicle 2, which is currently unidentifiable, was traveling east on I-20. A 2023 Hyundai Palisade and a 2006 Toyota Sequoia were traveling east on I-20, behind Vehicle 2. For reasons still under investigation, Baggett began traveling west in the eastbound lanes of I-20. As a result of Baggett’s actions, he collided with Vehicle 2 head-on. After the impact, Vehicle 2 became engulfed in flames. The Hyundai and the Toyota collided after taking evasive maneuvers.

Shelton, who was the driver of Vehicle 2, was pronounced dead at the scene. Vehicle 2’s front seat passenger suffered serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Five (5) additional occupants from the Hyundai and Toyota sustained minor injuries.

During the investigation, Baggett displayed signs of impairment and was arrested. A toxicology sample was collected from Baggett and is awaiting analysis. Baggett was booked into the Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center for vehicular homicide, first degree vehicular negligent injury, and six (6) counts of vehicular negligent injury. This crash remains under investigation.

Nearly half of the fatal crashes in Louisiana are caused by impaired drivers. Alcohol and other drugs affect your decision-making, vision, fine motor skills, and reaction times. Never drive while impaired, fatigued, or distracted, and follow all traffic laws. Drivers should have a plan for a safe ride home before consuming any alcohol. Additionally, taking just three seconds to fasten your seat belt is your best defense for surviving a traffic crash. Always ensure every occupant is properly restrained. Every trip. Every time.

In 2024, Troop G has investigated one fatal crash, resulting in one death.
