Update of LSP Investigation into Lafayette Police Officer-Involved Shooting

Update  The investigation into the Lafayette Police Department Officer-Involved shooting incident on April 9, 2023 remains ongoing at this time.  As the investigation progresses, Louisiana State Police investigators have determined the shooting occurred as a Lafayette Police Officer witnessed the suspect fire a weapon towards a separate individual in the night club parking lot.  Upon confronting the shooter, the officer discharged his weapon fatally wounding the suspect. LSP investigators recovered a handgun at the scene. 
 
Louisiana State Police is investigating the use of force by the officer and the Lafayette Police is handling the original shooting that left one victim injured.  The investigation is active and ongoing with additional information to be released in conjunction with the Lafayette Parish District Attorney’s Office.

Louisiana State Police Investigating Lafayette Police Officer-Involved Shooting 
Lafayette – Shortly before 11:00 p.m., on April 9, 2023, Louisiana State Police was requested by the Lafayette Police Department to investigate a shooting incident involving one of their officers. Detectives assigned to the Louisiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division are investigating the incident.
At approximately 10:45 p.m. on April 9, 2023, Lafayette Police responded to shots fired at a night club in the 4400 block of Johnston Street.  A responding officer working a security detail at that night club discharged his weapon. One subject was shot by an officer and sustained a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The officer was not injured. 
 
Lafayette Police are investigating the initial shooting incident and Louisiana State Police is the lead investigating agency for the officer-involved shooting.
