LaPlace – On October 24, 2023, shortly after 6:00 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a three-vehicle crash on US 61 near Oswald Avenue in St. John Parish. The crash claimed the life of 34-year-old Asanise R. Fleming of Reserve.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Fleming was driving a 2021 Ford Mustang south on U.S. 61 near Oswald Avenue. For reasons still under investigation, Fleming lost control of her vehicle and crossed the center line, entering the northbound lanes of US 61. At the same time, a 2014 Peterbilt Commercial Motor Vehicle was traveling south on US 61 and impacted the Ford. After the initial impact, the Ford rotated across the center, re-entering the southbound lanes. A 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis was traveling south and struck the Ford.

Fleming, who was unrestrained at the time of the crash, was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries.  She was pronounced dead at the scene. Two juvenile passengers in the Ford were unrestrained, suffered minor injuries, and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The drivers of the Peterbilt and the Grand Marquis were not injured in the crash. Toxicology samples were taken from all drivers and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind all motorists that while not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in a motor vehicle, such as never driving impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions, can often mean the difference between life and death.
