Unrestrained Mansfield Woman Killed in DeSoto Parish Crash

Mansfield – On Thursday, February 3, 2022, just after 7:00 a.m., Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop G began investigating a two-vehicle fatality crash on US Hwy 84, west of LA Hwy 3248. This crash claimed the life of 34-year-old Reshunda Smith, who was not restrained.

The initial investigation revealed a 2010 Chrysler 300, driven by Smith, was traveling east on US Hwy 84. At the same time, a 2016 DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office (DPSO) Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling west on US Hwy 84. For reasons still under investigation, Smith lost control and exited the roadway. After exiting the roadway, the Chrysler re-entered US Hwy 84 before crossing the centerline and colliding with the Chevrolet.

Smith was not wearing her seat belt and suffered fatal injuries as a result of this crash. She was pronounced deceased at the scene by the DeSoto Parish Coroner. The Deputy driving the DPSO vehicle was wearing his seat belt. He was transported to a local hospital and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash; however, routine toxicology samples were taken and submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Troopers would like to take this opportunity and remind motorists of ensuring their vehicle tires have adequate tread depth and are replaced when showing signs of wear. When tires have proper tread depth they will disperse water while maintaining contact with the road surface. In addition, reducing your speed will ensure that your vehicle will perform much safer during inclement weather. Lastly, buckling up is the most effective way to protect yourself during a vehicle crash. Failure to take a few seconds to buckle up can have devastating consequences. Louisiana law requires every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, to be properly restrained day or night.

In 2022, Troop G has investigated two fatal crashes resulting in two deaths.
