Unrestrained Man Killed in East Baton Rouge Parish Crash

Baker – Shortly after 7:30 pm on January 10, 2021, Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash on LA Hwy 19 north of LA Hwy 423 in East Baton Rouge Parish. The crash claimed the life of 56-year-old Tomas Grant of Baker.

The initial investigation revealed the crash occurred as Grant was traveling northbound on LA Hwy 19 in a 2016 Mercedes E35. At the same time, a 2020 Nissan Titan was traveling northbound on LA Hwy 19 in front of the Mercedes. For reasons still under investigation, the Mercedes struck the rear of the Nissan. After striking the Nissan, the Mercedes crossed the southbound lanes of LA Hwy 19 and exited the roadway to the left. After exiting the roadway, the Mercedes struck a canal embankment and overturned.

Grant was unrestrained at the time of the crash and was ejected from the vehicle. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene. Impairment on the part of Grant is suspected, and a toxicology sample was obtained from him for analysis. The driver and passenger of the Nissan were properly restrained and sustained moderate injuries. The driver of the Nissan was given a chemical breath test and showed no signs of impairment. The passenger of the Nissan was transported to a local hospital for treatment. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make good decisions while in a motor vehicle. Never drive while impaired, fatigued, or distracted, always ensure every occupant is properly restrained, and follow all traffic laws. While not all crashes are survivable, taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.
