Unrestrained Driver Killed in Calcasieu Parish Crash

Vinton – On February 18, 2023, shortly after 11:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D was notified of a single-vehicle fatality crash on U.S. Interstate 10 about 2 miles east of Louisiana Highway 108. The crash claimed the life of Duane Spearance, a 56-year-old male from Lake Charles.

The preliminary investigation revealed Spearance was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Blazer west on Interstate 10 in the right lane when his vehicle experienced a rear tire failure. The Chevrolet then traveled off the roadway to the right before overturning multiple times.

Spearance was not restrained at the time of the crash, ejected from the vehicle, and suffered fatal injuries. A passenger in the Chevrolet was properly restrained, suffered moderate injuries, and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
A standard toxicology sample was collected from Spearance and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
