Port Allen – On November 11, 2023, shortly after 6:30 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two-vehicle crash on LA 415 at LA 986 in West Baton Rouge Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the life of nine-year-old, Braelynn Washington of Port Allen.

The initial investigation revealed that a 2017 Jeep Cherokee was headed south on LA 415. At the same time, a2020 Chevrolet Blazer was headed north on LA 415. As the Jeep attempted to make a left turn at the intersection, the Chevrolet struck the passenger front side of the Jeep.

All occupants in the Jeep were properly restrained and uninjured. The driver and rear passenger of the Chevrolet were unrestrained and sustained moderate injuries. The front passenger of the Chevrolet was critically injured and transported to a local hospital. Due to injuries sustained in the crash, the child front passenger was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Impairment is unknown on the part of both drivers. This crash remains under investigation and Troopers will forward their findings to the West Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney’s office for evaluation.

Every occupant in a motor vehicle is required by Louisiana law to be properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. The proper use of child safety seats save lives and prevent injuries. Child safety seats offer the best protection for children in the event of a crash; however, approximately 3 out of 4 car seats are not used correctly.
