Covington – This afternoon, shortly before 2:30 p.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a fatal crash on LA Hwy 437 near South Fitzmorris Road in St. Tammany Parish. The crash claimed the life of 67-year-old Douglas Jenkins of Covington.

The initial investigation revealed the crash occurred as a 2011 Honda CRV, driven by 46-year-old Kimberly Dufrene of Covington, was northbound on LA Hwy 437. At the same time, a 1997 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, driven by Jenkins, was southbound on LA Hwy 437. For reasons still under investigation, the Honda began to make a left turn onto South Fitzmorris Road and impacted the motorcycle.

Although wearing a DOT-approved helmet, Jenkins suffered severe injuries as a result of the crash. He was transported to a local hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Dufrene was properly restrained, sustained minor injuries, and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Troopers arrested and booked Dufrene at the St. Tammany Parish Jail for violating L.R.S. 14:32.1 Vehicular Homicide, L.R.S. 14:98.2 DWI (2nd Offense), and L.R.S. 32:122 Failure to Yield while Turning Left. Routine toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Far too often, Troopers see the tragic consequences of preventable motor vehicle crashes. Troopers urge motorists to have a plan in place before consuming alcohol as it can impair visual ability, diminish fine motor skills, and decrease reaction times. Please choose never to drive impaired or ride with an impaired driver, and always buckle up. The conversation you have could make all the difference.
