State Police Release Additional Information Regarding Deputy-Involved Shooting in Lake Charles

Lake Charles – On January 17, 2024, the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations (LSP-BIO) was requested by the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office to investigate a shooting incident involving one of their deputies.

The preliminary investigation revealed at approximately 10:40 a.m. on January 17, 2024, deputies with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office (CPSO) were conducting an investigation in reference to vehicle crimes. During the investigation, deputies encountered a vehicle suspected to be involved in those crimes in the parking lot of a business in the 3600 block of Ryan Street. The vehicle was described as a red Hyundai Elantra.

Upon observing the Hyundai, deputies attempted to make contact with the driver of the vehicle. While attempting to make contact with the driver, he began to drive out of the parking lot. One of the deputies fired their weapon striking the driver. The driver and a passenger fled the scene in the Hyundai and a pursuit ensued.

The pursuit ended when the Hyundai crashed near the intersection of Ike Street and Kingham Road. The occupants fled on foot but were later apprehended in the 2100 block of Willowick Street.

Three subjects, one from the original scene near Ryan Street and two from the second scene near Willowick Street, were transported to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for treatment. No deputies were injured during the incident.

Louisiana State Police is the lead investigating agency for the deputy-involved shooting. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Forensic Investigative Unit responded and is assisting with the processing of the scene.
