Pedestrian Killed in St. Tammany Parish Crash

UPDATE: Proper notification has been made and yesterday's crash claimed the life of 36-year-old Miguel Martinez-Contreras of Tlaxcoapan, Mexico.

Slidell – This morning, shortly before 10:30 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on the Interstate 10 Twin Span Bridge in St. Tammany Parish. The identity of the pedestrian is being withheld pending notification to the family.

Troopers determined from the initial investigation that the pedestrian walked into the travel lanes of Interstate 10 westbound from the right shoulder. At the same time, a 2015 Freightliner Cascadia was traveling westbound in the right lane of Interstate 10. For reasons still under investigation, the Freightliner struck the pedestrian in the roadway.

The pedestrian sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased on the scene. The driver of the Freightliner was properly restrained and was not injured. As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were obtained from both the pedestrian and the driver of the Freightliner for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Pedestrians and motorists are urged to remain vigilant while on roadways and pay close attention to their surroundings. Crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines. Pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and should avoid walking on the roadway. Pedestrians must assume that approaching motorists cannot see them. Pedestrians should cross roadways in well-lit, designated areas and should always walk facing traffic. These simple steps can enhance safety for pedestrians.
