Nicaraguan Man Killed in Two-Vehicle Pointe Coupee Parish Crash

Livonia – On December 4, 2023, shortly after 5:30 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two-vehicle crash on LA 411 south of US 190 in Pointe Coupee Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 30-year-old Edine Diez of Nicaragua.

The initial investigation revealed that Diez was driving a 2007 Jeep Compass headed north on LA 411. At the same time, a 2014 Toyota Corolla was traveling south on LA 411. For reasons still being investigated, Diez failed to negotiate a left-hand curve and crossed the centerline. The Jeep then exited the roadway to the left, and subsequently re-entered the roadway in the southbound lanes. Upon reentering the roadway, the Jeep was struck by the Toyota.

Despite being properly restrained, Diez suffered fatal injuries, and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The passengers of the Jeep, also properly restrained, were transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries from the crash. The driver and passenger of the Toyota were both unrestrained and suffered moderate to severe injuries.  As part of the ongoing investigation, toxicology samples were taken from both drivers and will be submitted for analysis.

Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make good decisions while in a motor vehicle. Never drive impaired, fatigued or distracted, follow all traffic laws and always ensure every occupant is properly restrained. While not all crashes are survivable, taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.
