Multi-Vehicle Crash in Calcasieu Parish Leaves One Dead

Calcasieu Parish – On November 13, 2023, shortly before 6:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a multi-vehicle crash on US Hwy 171 (Calcasieu River Bridge) approximately 1 mile south of LA Hwy 378 in Calcasieu Parish. The crash claimed the life of 90-year-old Janette G. Spooner of Lake Charles.  

The preliminary investigation revealed Spooner was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the crash. Spooner sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Several drivers were cited for following too close. This crash remains under investigation. 

While not all crashes are preventable, limiting distractions, observing all traffic laws, and not driving while impaired can eliminate many of these crashes. When driving on populated roadways, it is essential to always limit speed, do not follow too close, and always look at least 5 seconds ahead when possible. Following these tips can help you get to your destination safely.

Troop D has investigated 31 fatal crashes resulting in 34 deaths in 2023.
