Motorcyclist Killed in Ascension Parish Crash
Prairieville – Shortly after 5:00 pm on December 3, 2020, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash involving a motorcycle on US Hwy 61 north of Swamp Road in Ascension Parish. The crash claimed the life of 35-year-old Dutch Shirley of Gonzales.
The initial investigation revealed the crash occurred as 45-year-old Shannon Morris of Baton Rouge was traveling northbound on US Hwy 61 in a 2005 Ford F150. At the same time, Shirley was traveling southbound on US Hwy 61 on a 2014 Kawasaki EX650E motorcycle. For reasons still under investigation, Morris failed to yield and made a left turn across the southbound lanes of travel into the path of Shirley’s motorcycle. This resulted in the Kawasaki striking the Ford on its passenger side door.

Despite the fact he was wearing a DOT approved helmet, Shirley sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. He was pronounced deceased on the scene. Morris was properly restrained and sustained minor injuries. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment. As part of the ongoing investigation, toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers for analysis. This crash remains under investigation and charges may be pending.

Motorists should always be cognizant of their surroundings and obey posted traffic control signs. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and obeying all traffic laws can often mean the difference between life and death.
