Mittie Woman Killed in Vernon Parish Crash

Vernon Parish – On July 8, 2023, at approximately 11:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a one-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 10 west of Pitkin.  The crash claimed the life of 23-year-old Maddisen A. Martin.

The initial investigation revealed that a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 28-year-old John White Jr. of Pitkin, was traveling west of Louisiana Highway 10. For reasons still under investigation, the Chevrolet traveled off the roadway and overturned. This action ejected Martin from the vehicle.

Martin, who was not restrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. White, who also was not restrained, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Routine toxicology samples were obtained and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained can often mean the difference between life and death.

In 2023, Troop E has investigated 29 fatal crashes, resulting in 34 deaths.
