Impairment Suspected in Fatal Head-On Tangipahoa Parish Crash
Loranger – This morning, shortly before 5:00 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a two-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 445 near Gateway Drive in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash claimed the life of 24-year-old Austin Harper of Loranger.

The initial investigation revealed that the crash occurred as 31-year-old Justin Scully of Loranger was northbound on LA Hwy 445 in a 2009 GMC Acadia. At the same time, Harper was southbound on LA Hwy 445 in a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta. The preliminary findings revealed the GMC crossed the centerline into the opposing lane, which resulted in the GMC striking the Volkswagen head-on.

Harper was unrestrained and sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. He was pronounced deceased on the scene. At this time, impairment is unknown on the part of Harper, but a routine toxicology sample was obtained and will be submitted for analysis.

Scully was properly restrained at the time of the crash and sustained serious injuries. He was transported to a local hospital. Impairment is suspected to be a factor in the crash on the part of Scully. A toxicology sample was obtained from Scully and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.

Far too often, Troopers see the tragic consequences of preventable motor vehicle crashes. Troopers urge motorists to have a plan in place before consuming alcohol as it can impair visual ability, diminish fine motor skills, and decrease reaction times. Please do not drive impaired or ride with an impaired driver, and always buckle up. We encourage you to speak with loved ones about these topics. The conversation you have could make all the difference.
