Hit and Run Crash Claims the Life of Baton Rouge Man

Zachary – On January 24, 2024, just before 9:30 pm, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A responded to a two-vehicle crash on LA 64 near Tucker Road. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 65-year-old Jeffery Variste of Baton Rouge.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Variste was driving a 2017 Chevrolet pickup truck east on LA 64 while a 2012 Dodge pickup truck was traveling west on LA 64. For unknown reasons, the Dodge crossed the center of the roadway and impacted the Chevrolet head-on.

After the crash occurred, the driver of the Dodge fled the scene on foot and was not located. Variste suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. A passenger in the Chevrolet suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
