Driver Succumbs to Injuries Sustained in Calcasieu Parish Crash

Calcasieu Parish – On October 27, 2023, shortly before 11:45 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle serious injury crash involving an 18-wheeler on Interstate 10 about 2 miles east of LA Hwy 397 in Calcasieu Parish. The crash claimed the life of 30-year-old Adrienne Chivonne Manuel of Iowa, Louisiana.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2021 Hyundai Sonata, being operated by Manuel, was stopped for unknown reasons in the middle lane of travel on I-10. At the same time, the driver of a 2018 Kenworth 18-wheeler was traveling east behind another 18-wheeler and approaching the stopped Hyundai. The driver of the first 18-wheeler was able to change lanes and avoided striking the Hyundai. In an attempt to avoid a crash, the driver of the Kenworth took evasive actions by steering towards the left, but was not able to and struck the rear of the Hyundai. The impact caused the Hyundai to travel off the right-hand side of the roadway.

Manuel was properly restrained but sustained serious injuries. She was transported to a Lake Charles area hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the 18-wheeler was properly restrained and not injured.

A toxicology sample was obtained from Manuel and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Troop D has investigated 29 fatal crashes resulting in 32 deaths in 2023.
