Driver Succumbs to Injuries in St. Landry Parish Crash

– At approximately 5:00 p.m. on March 16, 2023, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I were notified of a single-vehicle crash on LA 182 near Cotton Patch Road in St. Landry Parish. The crash ultimately took the life of 72-year-old Freddie Thomas of Wilsonville, Alabama. 

The initial investigation by State Police revealed the crash occurred as Thomas was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer east on LA 182. For reasons still under investigation, Thomas failed to negotiate a curve. The Trailblazer ran off the roadway, struck an embankment, and overturned. 

Thomas was restrained at the time of the crash. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. On March 29, 2023, Troop I was notified Thomas had succumbed to his injuries on March 29, 2023. 

Chemical results are pending and this crash remains under investigation.

Troop I has investigated 16 fatal crashes resulting in 18 deaths since the beginning of 2023.
