Driver Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash in Jefferson Davis Parish
Jefferson Davis Parish – On August 13, 2022, shortly after 10:30 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single-vehicle fatal crash on the off ramp of Interstate 10 to US Hwy 165 in Jefferson Davis Parish. The crash claimed the life of 71-year-old Antonio William Vega of Midland, Texas.

The preliminary investigation revealed, a 1997 Peterbilt, driven by Vega, was traveling east on I-10 in the exit lane for US Hwy 165 when he failed to negotiate a right hand curve onto the exit ramp. The Peterbilt traveled off the left side of the roadway and overturned several times.

Vega sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speed is suspected to be a factor in this crash. A toxicology sample was obtained from Vega and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Speeding reduces the driver’s ability to steer safely around vehicles or objects on the roadway, extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle, and increases the distance a vehicle travels while the driver reacts to a situation. Speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors are among the leading causes of highway crashes and fatalities.

Troop D has investigated 15 fatal crashes resulting in 17 deaths in 2022.
