Driver Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash in Iberia Parish

New Iberia – Shortly after 10:00 a.m., on February 26, 2024, Louisiana State Police Troop I was notified of a single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 31 near Greenbriar Street. The crash claimed the life of 73-year-old Leroy Lewis of New Iberia.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed the crash occurred as Lewis was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado south on LA 31. For reasons still under investigation, the Silverado exited the roadway to the right. Upon doing so, the Silverado entered a ditch before striking a tree.

Despite being restrained, Lewis suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office. 

Impairment is unknown, and a toxicology sample was obtained for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Troop I has investigated 5 fatal crashes, resulting in 5 deaths in 2024.
