Driver Identified in Hit and Run Crash that Claimed the Life of a Baton Rouge Man

**UPDATE** Zachary – Through investigative means, Troopers were able to identify the driver of the Dodge pickup as 38-year-old Humberto Vasquez. On February 3, 2024, the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office recovered a deceased body from the Comite River, which was identified as Humberto Vasquez.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of Mr. Vasquez and the preliminary findings do not show signs of foul play. This crash remains under investigation, and Troopers ask that anyone with information regarding this crash contact Louisiana State Police Troop A at 225-754-8500.

 

Original Release:

January 25, 2024 Zachary – On January 24, 2024, just before 9:30 pm, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A responded to a two-vehicle crash on LA 64 near Tucker Road. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 65-year-old Jeffery Variste of Baton Rouge.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Variste was driving a 2017 Chevrolet pickup truck east on LA 64 while a 2012 Dodge pickup truck was traveling west on LA 64. For unknown reasons, the Dodge crossed the center of the roadway and impacted the Chevrolet head-on.

After the crash occurred, the driver of the Dodge fled the scene on foot and was not located. Variste suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.  A passenger in the Chevrolet suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
