Driver Arrested After Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash Involving Pedestrian

Port Allen – Shortly after 1:30 p.m. on March 12, 2024, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A responded to a hit-and-run fatality crash involving a pedestrian on LA 987-3 just east of LA 415. The crash claimed the life of 37-year-old Theresa Weems of Port Allen.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Weems was walking eastbound in the westbound lane of LA 987-3, near the edge of the roadway. A vehicle traveling in the westbound lane of LA 987-3 struck Weems and fled the scene. Weems suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Through investigative means, Troopers were able to determine that the vehicle that struck Weems was a 2015 Jeep Cherokee, driven by 30-year-old Austin Kelley of Port Allen at the time of the crash. Troopers located Kelley and the Jeep at a nearby location. Kelley was arrested and booked into the West Baton Rouge Parish Jail for Felony Hit and Run involving death. This crash remains under investigation.

To minimize the likelihood of crashes, it's essential for pedestrians to walk against the flow of traffic, enabling them to anticipate approaching vehicles and respond effectively. Furthermore, when walking during darker hours, opting for brightly colored attire or reflective accessories enhances visibility for drivers.
