Denham Springs Woman Killed in Two-Vehicle Crash

Livingston – On February 24, 2023, shortly after 11:00 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 12 eastbound near LA 63 in Livingston Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 69-year-old Maria Alonso of Denham Springs.

The initial investigation revealed that Alonso was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Impala headed east on Interstate 12.   At the same time, a 2009 Dodge Challenger was headed east on Interstate 12.  For reasons still being investigated, Alonso parked her vehicle on the interstate in the left travel lane and entered the passenger front seat. Subsequently, the Challenger struck the rear of the Impala.

Alonso, who was not restrained at the time of the crash, succumbed to her injuries at the scene.  The driver of the Challenger was properly restrained and was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.  As part of the ongoing investigation, a toxicology sample was obtained from both occupants and will be submitted for analysis.

While not all crashes are survivable, statistics demonstrate that properly worn restraints can significantly reduce your risk of being injured or killed in a crash. Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Properly wearing your seat belt is one of the most effective ways to save your life and reduce injuries in crashes.
