Violet - Shortly after 4:00 p.m. on November 7, 2023, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop B began investigating a fatal crash involving a bicyclist on LA 46 near Port ship Access Road No1, in Violet. The crash claimed the life of 25-year-old Joshua J. Chestnut of Metairie.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Chestnut was riding a bicycle north on Port Ship Access Road No1, nearing the intersection of LA 46. At the same time, a 2006 Mack dump truck was traveling east on LA 46. For reasons still under investigation, Chestnut turned into the eastbound lane of LA 46 and entered the path of the dump truck. Chestnut was struck by the dump truck, suffered serious injuries, and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

Impairment on the part of Chestnut is unknown, and toxicology samples will be obtained for testing. Impairment is not suspected for the driver of the dump truck, however a voluntary blood sample was obtained and will be sent for analysis. This investigation is ongoing.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind bicyclists never to assume that a motorist can see you. Simple precautions such as wearing reflective clothing and avoiding distractions are vital to preventing crashes. Wearing a protective helmet can help reduce the risk of serious injury and fatality. Louisiana law requires bicyclists to remain as close to the right side of the road roadway as possible and follow all traffic laws.
