Baton Rouge Man Killed in East Baton Rouge Parish Crash
Baton Rouge – Shortly before 2:30 pm on October 9, 2020, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash on US Hwy 61 south of LA Hwy 3246 in East Baton Rouge Parish. The crash took the life of 75-year-old James Bobbitt of Baton Rouge.
The initial investigation revealed the crash occurred as Bobbitt attempted to enter the southbound lanes of US Hwy 61 from a private driveway in a 2019 Toyota RAV4. At the same time, a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis was traveling southbound on US Hwy 61. For reasons still under investigation, Bobbitt failed to yield and made a left turn into the path of the Mercury. This resulted in the Mercury striking the Toyota on its driver’s side door.

Bobbitt sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash. He was transported to a local hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Mercury sustained minor injuries and was also transported to a local hospital for treatment. Restraint use and driver impairment remain part of the ongoing investigation at this time. Toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers for analysis.

Motorists should always be cognizant of their surroundings and obey posted traffic control signs. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and obeying all traffic laws can often mean the difference between life and death.
