The Special Investigations Division is comprised of, and responsible for, the following sections/units/programs:
- Special Investigations Unit
This section is comprised of the three following units/programs:
- Technical Support Unit
The Technical Support Unit is responsible for providing technical investigative support to the Louisiana State Police as well as well as other state and local law enforcement agencies in Louisiana.
- Special Victims Unit
Rescue and seek justice for the victims of crimes involving the exploitation of children and the trafficking of humans for sex or labor through investigative partnerships with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, and through public education.
- Louisiana Clearinghouse for Missing and Exploited Children
Created in 1985 by the Louisiana Legislature, LACMEC is the central repository of information about missing and exploited children. Parents, guardians, law enforcement and National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) provide the clearinghouse with details and photos to send across the state and nation. This information is sent to local law enforcement agencies to assist in the recovery of these missing children.
LACMEC also gives parents and guardians important information on the role they play in helping their children return home and available local and national resources.
- Investigative Support Section
This section is comprised of the two following units/programs:
- Louisiana State Analytical & Fusion Exchange (LA-SAFE)
The mission of the Louisiana State Analytical & Fusion Exchange (LA-SAFE) is to support public safety and homeland security in an all–crimes/all-hazards environment and to support federal, state, and local agencies by collecting, analyzing, and disseminating information and intelligence data regarding criminal and terrorist activity.
- Criminal Intelligence Unit
It shall be the mission of the Louisiana State Police Criminal Intelligence Unit to collect, evaluate, and disseminate information on known or suspected criminal violators, groups, or organizations for analytical exploitation by the Investigative Support Unit. LA-SAFE will provide the department, other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies with timely information regarding matters directly or indirectly affecting the safety and security of the people in the state. The Criminal Intelligence Unit shall only collect and retain information which is directly related to a legitimate law enforcement purpose. The activities of this unit shall not interfere with the exercise of constitutionally guaranteed rights and privileges of individuals.
